Write a three(3) paragraph essay explaining how applying the concept

Ask: Write a three(3) paragraph essay explaining how applying the concept of intersubjectivity could help you to become a subject of clarity to others.

TITLE: I AS A SUBJECT OF CLARITY TO OTHERS

Answer:

Three Problems of Intersubjectivity—And One Solution∗WENDELIN REICHUppsala UniversitySocial thinkers often use the concept of intersubjectivity to mark out a problemof theoretical sociology: If people are unable to look into each others’ minds, whydo they often understand each other nonetheless? This issue has been debated ex-tensively by philosophers and sociologists in three largely disconnected discourses. The article investigates the three discourses for isolable ideas that can be fittedinto a sociological answer to the problem of intersubjectivity. An interactional so-lution, fully coherent with key insights from the discourses, is offered at the end ofthe article. Its main point is to identify coordinative interactional mechanisms thatcompel participants to “make themselves understandable” vis-`a-vis their interactionpartners. The concept of intersubjectivity has fascinated sociologists for more than half acentury. With its implied promise of a connection (“inter”) between seemingly au-tonomous selves (“subjects”), it appears to express a core aspect of sociality. Atthe same time, the mere availability of the concept marks the existence of such aconnection as contingent, as something that cannot always be taken for grantedand that, therefore, stands in need of sociological explanation. Sch¨utz, who took theconcept from Husserl and recast it as a foundational problem of social science, spentthe better part of his professional life trying to solve the “enigma of how man canunderstand his fellow man” (Sch¨utz 1962d:179). When Berger and Luckmann intro-duced both Sch¨utz and his adapted notion of intersubjectivity to the sociologicalmainstream, they made clear that this enigma is normally not felt by members ofsociety, who take the intelligibility of their interaction partners for granted (Bergerand Luckmann 1966:23). Contemporary research in social psychology confirmsthis phenomenological intuition, showing that human beings are naturally condi-tioned to attempt to mind-read others in social situations (Gergely and Csibra 2003;Papafragou 2002) and to assume that they are continuously being mind-read byco-present others (Gilovich et al. 1998; Tomasello et al. 2005).The establishment of a situation where “man can understand his fellow-man” de-pends normally not only on the skills of the understander (or mind reader), butalso on the cooperation of the person who is to be understood. Far from render-ing the problem of intersubjectivity obsolete, social-psychological research thus castsSch¨utz’s “enigma” as even more mysterious because it fails to answer the question of∗Address correspondence to: Wendelin Reich, Department of Sociology, Uppsala University, Box 624,75126 Uppsala, Sweden (SE). It is based on Chapter 1 of the author’s unpublished Ph.D. thesis in sociology (UppsalaUniversity, 2003). On a personal note, I would like to add that it is with mixed feelings that I see thisarticle get to print. “Intersubjectivity” or the understanding of other individuals’ thoughts and feelingshas become an important line of research in recent neuropsychology, developmental cognitive science, and comparative (primate) psychology. The sociological way of approaching the subject now strikes meas rather rationalistic, and I can only hope that the article may, nonetheless, have some merit as it stand
