We’re really looking forward _____ on holiday. to go going
Ask: We’re really looking forward _____ on holiday.

to going
We’re really looking forward to going on holiday, so the answer is to going
In the first glance, one might be tricked because grammatically, “to go” seems to be the correct answer. However, when considering the structure of this sentence, we can easily spot an an unique use of the verb ‘go’: that this verb is becomes one with the noun “on holiday”. Why is it so?
In English grammar, gerund is when a verb becomes a noun. Basically, “going” is commonly used as a verb. For example, “Anna is going to the cinema”. However, if the very same “going” is used as a noun, then the example would be, “Anna is looking forward to going home”, alternatively, “Anna looks forward to going home”. All of these are grammatically correct.
The same pattern then can be applied to the original question in this thread: We’re looking forward to going on holiday. Here, to going is used as a noun, because the verb is already there (looking forward). Even if the sentence is modified a little, let us say, “We look forward [blank] on holiday, then the answer would still be “to going”.
To help you remember when to use “gerund“, or its counterpart: infinitive, take a look at the pattern of the sentence. In addition, commonly, the phrase “looking forward” will always be followed by a gerund, and remember that gerund always has the -ing at the end of the verb.
Here are more illustration of a few more examples of the use of gerund:
- Nana’s mother taught me dancing.
- Ron and Bart went there eating.
- Sasa and Koko are no longer afraid of flying.
Notice that there are already a verb prior to the -ing of the words commonly used as verbs (dancing, eating, flying), and that is where the gerund is.
