Who can impeach justices of supreme court philippines?

Ask: Who can impeach justices of supreme court philippines?

Impeachment in the Philippines is an expressed power of the Congress of the Philippines to formally charge a serving government official with an impeachable offense. After being impeached by the House of Representatives, the official is then tried in the Senate. If convicted, the official is either removed from office or censured.

Impeachment followed by conviction is often the only way to forcibly remove a sitting official. While “impeachment” is often used to refer to the entire process of removing an official from office, it only formally refers to the indictment stage in the House of Representatives, not the trial stage in the Senate. Under the current Constitution, an official can be impeached if one third of the House of Representatives votes in favor. Since it takes only a simple majority to set the agenda or to adjourn the House, it can be difficult for a minority of one third to bring a vote and impeach an official

The Impeachment of Estrada : Day of Political Tumult in Manila

By Thomas Fuller, International Herald Tribune

Nov. 14, 2000

MANILA— President Joseph Estrada of the Philippines was impeached Monday without any debate or vote in a stormy session of Congress that lasted just five minutes.

Mr. Estrada, who has served two and a half years of his six-year term, now faces a trial in the Senate and the prospect of being the first Philippine president ever removed from office.

His impeachment came amid a messy day of partisan politics punctuated by the removal of both the Senate president and the speaker of the House of Representatives.

The Philippine peso fell to 50.30 to the dollar on Monday in New York, down from 50.15 on Friday, as the Manila stock market fell 2.22 percent.

Mr. Estrada is accused of siphoning off tobacco taxes and accepting millions of dollars in payments from illegal-gambling operators. He denies the accusations. Hours before his impeachment, the president said he was confident about the outcome his Senate trial.
