A little girl Fyokla, aged 6 is looking for Terenty. A man whom he was not related at all but had trusted him and looked after him as her own father.
Fyokla’s brother Danilka, aged 8 was in trouble because his hand was trapped into a hole in the tree while trying to get the cuckoo’s egg.
Both Terenty and Fyokla run down the the village and turn along the dusty road towards the count’s copse that lies dark blue in the distance which is about a mile and a half away. Fyokla leads Terenty into a thicket, and, after going a quarter of a mile, points to Danilka. There they saw the little fellow with hair as red as ocher and a pale sickly face, standing leaned against the tree, with his head on one side, looking sideways at the sky. In one hand he holds his shabby old cap, the other is hidden in an old lime tree. Terenty immediately snaps off the broken piece to release Danilka’s hand which is red and crushed.
