The Department of Social Welfare and Development-Cordillera delivered 10,000 family food packs in Kalinga to augment the province’s food supply.
DSWD-Cordillera Director Leo Quintilla said 5,000 food packs were brought to the province last week and additional 5,000 packs were delivered on Feb. 15.
He said this is part of the 17,500 food packs requested by the provincial government from the agency to augment the supply to be distributed to residents whose areas are declared under granular lockdown.
Each food pack contains five kilos of rice, canned goods, instant coffee, and instant noodles. Hygiene kits were also brought for distribution.
Quintilla said local government units ask for augmentation from the DSWD to assure their people in areas placed under granular lockdown will not go out of their homes to help prevent the spread of the Covid-19.
“Our role is to augment the supply of the LGUs. The first responders are the LGUs,” he said.
The National Inter-Agency Task Force against Covid-19 through the Bases Conversion Development Authority, Department of Health, and the Bureau of Fire Protection started the mass testing in the province targeting about 8,000 individuals in response to the spike in cases in the province on the first week of January.
Kalinga was placed under higher quarantine classifications with Tabuk City placed under enhanced community quarantine on Jan. 24.
The three-week enhanced community quarantine lockdown in Tabuk has been lifted and the city is now under general community quarantine from Feb. 15 until end of the month.
The Cordillera is under general community quarantine until Feb. 28.

Various groups and education stakeholders on Tuesday, Sept. 7, issued a five-point demand to the national government as another school year starts under the imposition of distance learning.
“The President has rejected at least three times the proposals to reopen schools in areas considered to be at low-risk for a COVID-19 outbreak, without providing a clear roadmap on how and when it plans to do so,” the groups said in a statement.
The groups hit Duterte’s failure to provide the requisites for the safe delivery of accessible quality of education amid the pandemic.
“Millions of youth and education workers will be again subjected to under-supported and onerous distance learning amidst the ranging pandemic and worsening economic crisis,” they added.
According to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the Philippines is one of the five countries in the world that have not started in-person classes since the pandemic began.
School closures have affected over 27 million students.
The Duterte administration is urged to roll out a clear plan for the immediate safe conduct of limited and voluntary in-classroom learning in low-risk areas; provide the needed teaching and learning resources for distance learning; ensure the provision of health protection and payment of just benefits to education workers; allocate higher budget to education in 2022; and implement genuine academic ease.
The groups also urged to ramp up the vaccination of teacher and education support personnel and grant P1,500 monthly Internet allowance to teachers and Internet subsidy to learners in need.
